Driving on Route 66, and later on Interstate 40, always meant seeing the billboard “Tucumcari Tonight” inviting travelers to stay. To me as a child and driving from the flatlands of Oklahoma and across Texas through Amarillo, it was my first time to see the beginnings of mountains ahead.
